No, tar is a kind of 'normalized' format of data and it did not change.
your sources might be compressed data so to unpack it try
tar xvzf <your-filename>

Hi:  I have been away from my linux machine for about a year and find my
attempts now to upgrade foiled by the inability of tar to unpack the
latest versions of the kernel.  Does anyone know why this might be?  New
version of tar, perhaps? Thanks for any assistance with this.
