Strategy? The recent growth in use of Linux has probably been helped by
a lack of one. Sadly economics, customer taste and bully-boy marketing
tactics usually mean that the most popular is not always the best.
Example: there's a Macdonald's in almost every high street on the
planet. Therefore, what hope for Linux?

However, your posting has prompted a few comments of my own:
1. GUI's. Fortunately, X-windows allows a variety of window managers to
suit all tastes and graphics power. Linux lets you make your machine
look like windoze 95 if you want, or Motif (some would say more
"unix-like") etc etc. Linux 1, M$ 0.
2. Compatibility (1). Linux supports just about every file system in
use and runs on almost every platform. Even NT is only supported on 2
(Intel and DEC Alpha). Embrace? Yes! Linux 1, M$ 0.
3. Compatibility (2). Linux supports a whole load of different
hardware. Compared with winNT, which is fairer considering the target
user, well there's no comparison! Extend? Yes! Linux 1, M$ 0.

Linux is not going to replace M$, in fact I don't think it's a good idea
if it does. People generally want choice and competition in the
"marketplace" is healthy. If you want a computer for the kids, Linux is
probably not the choice (at the moment, who knows?), but if you want a
computer that works, choose Linux.
