Gentlemen, Thanks for the explanations and reassurance about <make>. It seems that if one receives uncorrupted files (very likely, at least in my happy experience!), one has little to worry about. The programmer has taken the responsibility for creating a correct makefile. When the time comes, I'll put my faith in the HOW-TOs, expect detailed instructions where needed, and not worry in the meantime. As to the post about differences between Linux and typical Unices, it seems that a simple answer is not really possible. However it seems that in the important particulars, Linux is generally quite compatible and the differences are relatively minor. (I have that nagging feeling that I should reread the FAQ!) Bought _Running Linux_, and am reading it. O'Reilly seems to have a genius for putting out good books. This must be my 4th, and my budget has been quite tight. Thanks to all! The patience and tolerance of the helpers in this List does a decent part in making the world a better place. |* Nicholas Bodley *|* Electronic Technician {*} Autodidact & Polymath |* Waltham, Mass. *|* ----------------------------------------------- |* [EMAIL PROTECTED] *|* The personal computer industry will have become |* Amateur musician *|* mature when crashes become unacceptable. --------------------------------------------------------------------------
