text-mode surfing

My hardware doesnot allow me to use X while, regretfully, all my internet
surfing experience is windows-based. 

In my attempt to get connected and get an IP Masquerade going on the LAN,
I'd like to know whether people can still surf and email with text-based
applications like lynx and pine? Or are there alternatives?
