I sent in the following message a while back:
I wonder if someone can help with this problem. I have just installed
Red Hat 5.2 , (2.0.36) from a CD distribution. I am able to open
X-Window with the *startx* command. I would like to use the Control
Panel to do the necessary administration procedures. When I click on the
menus: Start--Programs--Administration, I get a menu which includes:
*About Myself*, *Change Password*, *Control Panel*, *Disk Management*,
*HelpTool*, and *Kernel Configuration* .
Clicking on these utilities gets no response. There is no screen
activity, no sounds indicating the hard drive is being searched, no
windows open, nor does the task bar change. The remainder of that same
Administration list is: *Linux config*, *Network Config*, *Printer
Tool*, and several others that do open the utilities when clicked. I
have reinstalled three times now from the CD, making sure that I have
selected the appropriate packages for Control Panel.
Several contributors to the list made helpful suggestions which included
suggesting as to how I could be sure that the control panel files were
installed. They are present and are in: /usr/lib/rhs/control-panel/
The man page for control panel says that in order to activate Control
Panel I should issue the command *control-panel* in an Xterm window (as
root). I did this and get the following response:
**ERROR**: unable to find a usable depth
Any suggestions as to what this means and what to do from here. I repeat
I'm a complete newbie with Linux
and self taught as far as computer skills are concerned so please be
very specific in answering. Thanks in advance.
