1. What X server are you using? I checked the list of supported cards at http://www.xfree86.org/cardlist.html and the "ATI 3D Rage" isn't listed, though several other "ATI 3D" cards are (all using the Mach64 server). You need to consider the possibility that you are using an unsupported card and will need to get an experimental server from someplace other than XFree86 or your distribution CD ... or try to fall back to the SVGA or VGA16 server. 2. If you run startx as "startx -probeonly >xerrors 2>&1", does startx report anything useful (in the file xerrors)? 3. What are the basics of your setup? What Linux distribution? Which version?
