Caldera is the same way.  With my Red Hat system, I installed the kernel
headers, but not the source code, and after the install was complete, I
downloaded 2.2.0 when it came out, and installed it and compiled.  =)
Ever since then, I've been updating the kernel with patches.

I think all of the Linux distributions end up using their own kernels as
far as source is concerned.  Oh, well.  =)
