Hi !
I'm working now with puters for over 15 years and the expereince i made is
that you run in less trouble with senseful and standard hardware, such as
an original SoundBlaster, an external modem that can be accessed with the
AT commands, a grafics/video card where the manufacturer has a reliable
support (like Diamond, Genoa, ATi) and uses a chipset that is not unique in
the world.
I really recommend to built your own computer, it will cost you some $,
marks, euros or whatever more, but you know what is in your puter, that it
is not some crap from PingPong and you can select exactly what you like.
Some companies selling ready made puters just make it look good with the
numbers. Yes, there is that ultra fast Intel P2-450 MHz processor, but then
a crappy onboard grafics card is added and a snail drive from Maxtor (made
damn bad expereicnes with Maxtor, i have to say, no wonder why their drives
are always the cheapest).
A week ago i was close before throwing a PackardBell out of the window,
soundcard and modem were on one board, grafics card was on board and noone
in the wide world had any drivers for this soundcard - PB even rejected to
give any advice, telling me that the guarantee is void now, what a support !
Sorry to bitch around so much, but think twice when you buy stuff. Go to a
store where the clerks now sth about computers, go to a store where you can
go back and bug them with questions, buy parts where the manufacturer gives
you a good client support (check their websites and judge urself). Building
your own PC makes fun, let's you get into the topic "computer" better than
just puching the mouse around and it helped me a lot to fix problems.
If you are not into that, ask someone you know and trust, put a flyer on a
board in a college or university, i bet there is someone who did that
before and likes to help you.
Last but not least write to the company ur new puter is from and complain
about your bad experience and that you are not satisfied with their product
at all. If they then don't react, write back and tell them that you are now
forced to post it to mailinglists and you will probably write to the local
newspaper about their crappy support (you don't really have to do that in
the end). This made PackardBell wake up and finally they gave me drivers
for this cranky soundmodemcard.
I know i didn't help you with your problem, but you paid for sth that you
want to work well - and if it doesn't work well, then ask on mailinglists
(as you did) and complain to the store/manufacturer/company where ur puter
is from.
Small solutions for a big world and where did you go yesterday ???
