Type minicom -c on -s

Setup the serial port to point directly to /dev/ttyS1, if you modem is
on com1 under dos. 
Then save configuretion as DEFAULT, shutdown minicom, restart and try
again.  If it works,
reboot, type reboot on the command line as root and sit back, try
minicom again.

If that doesn't work check your init string.  Try using AT, remeber to
write down the older 
init string for further reference :)
