I have never used that option, one way around the problem untill you can
find out more about the cause, is just close x use logout not shutdown, in
your console do a three finger salute, which is for the unworthy,
ctrl-alt-delete together.

Possable cause is running kde as a user and not having permissions to
unmount filesystems. {shot in the dark}
