You mean adding it to rc.halt/rc.reboot (or whatever the equivalent is 
on your system)? If so, then yes, that would work.

However, it's probably better to do it manually. The shutdown
procedure should generally complete relatively quickly. When someone
from the electricity company (or office management) tells you that the
power is getting cut off in 5 minutes time, you don't want to be stuck
with a system that takes 15 minutes to shut down.
