I've used Maxtor drives (among other brands) with Linux for years, and I've
had no problems, not even minor ones (let alone something as serious as what
you say your friend describes). The Linux FAQ at Maxtor's Web site (URL
http://www.maxtor.com/technology/q&a/qa901002.html) lists no broad problems,
only an incompatibility between LILO and Maxtor's "MaxBlast" product.
If there are details, I'd be interested in knowing them ... but absent
better supporting info, I'd be skeptical of this report.
