Thanks for all the replies. The md device driver sounds interesting.  I'll
investigate further.  Any pointers to further info?

I considered RAID but I think it requires all the disks to be the same size
and the disks I propose to use are an 8G and 4G.  Am I right?  Can any one
enlighten me?
