I can't authoritatively answer all of that, but I can tell you where to
start. Check out the XFree86-HOWTO at http://howto.linuxberg.com. I found
that pretty invaluable.

You'll need to know a lot about the specifics of your video hardware. This
includes things like your monitor frequencies and your video card chipset.
Online documentation will help you determine what you need to know.

Finally, I *think* you can run X over a network...I've never done this,
but from what I gather it's a very standard (and powerful) aspect of the
x-server setup. I don't want to mislead you on this...perhaps someone else
has more info on this. Good luck!
