usr 56k message modem

does anyone know if the usr 56k message modem (external) is a losemodem?
on the box, it states the min. requirements as win3.1/95/98. i did not
notice this until now. i made it clear to the salesperson i wanted a
non-winmodem and was foolish enough to have trusted he had given me what
i'd asked for.
