VNC isn't an x-server.  It is, in fact, completely different.  It uses a proprietary 
protocol for allowing remote control of a desktop from heterogeniuos platforms.  
Pretty cool idea, unfortunately you saturate an ethernet running little more than one 
of these things.  Even on an unpoluted lan the latency from VNC is somewhat 
uncomfortable.  

It's cool for a specific class of needs, but it isn't general purpose.
