I also had a problem with my AWE64 and received the same error message that you

In my case it was solved by commenting out the references to my scsi scanner
interface card in /etc/isapnp.conf
I've not attempted to use the scanner with Linux but the isapnp dump found the
card and assigned irqs to it which conflicted with the sound card.
Obviously your system is not identical to mine but I have also heard of the
same happening with unused winmodems.
