The use of modules is the way to go, just dont define disk ide or
scsi disk drivers as modules or ext2 filesystems, otherwise you will
not be able to boot, without taking other serious steps.

The advantages have been explained in another mail, however the
comment on less securety is not such a big deal as that was discussed
in detail here many moons ago.
