Actually,

I didn't have my tulip driver(.91g) or my soundblaster live (emu10k1)set
up. After getting both to work, I continued to be able to log into the
internet though. It was only after a few hours and about six reboot that I
lost my ability to dialup. I already checked my pap-secrets file and I
have a line in it. However, isn't the password suppose to be *******
instead of actual text? How can I determine if I accidentally changed how
pppd looks for a secret?

I did try to install doom 1.8 (unsuccessfully) and I did install King of
the Hill. Could that have changed something?

How do I make a new PAP secret? Just delete and replace?

Normally, pppd does not require the remote system to authenticate
itself, unless it sees the option +pap, in which case it looks in
/etc/ppp/pap-secrets. If the script was working and hasn't changed,
perhaps you have misplaced or damaged pap-secrets. Depending on the
options to pppd, you might change the rules for choosing a secret by
changing hostname.
