Considering you say theres not much to be lost i would say do a complete
install. The installer will install the new stuff on the same partitions
which have 5.2 on them, it will not overwrite the exsiting data as others
explaned, it will ask you if you want to reformat the disk first, it is
strongly advised to do that.

As to an upgarde, that can be done easily as well, however upgradeing is
what it says, only exsiting programs get upgraded and new programs get
installed, which means if you did not install a certain program on 5.2 then
6.1 might also leave it out.

I upgraded 6.0 to 6.1 but found many things wrong, if disk space is very
limited then you could bump into a few problems because the upgrade does a
lot of backing up of config and other files which takes up considerable
space.
