I hope we can help too, but we won't be able to without a lot more information. 

You said you use "Res Hat 5.2". That's a start (and the typo is no big
deal). But you also need to tell us:

1. What does "successfully connect" mean? Is this a ppp link, DSL, cable
modem, or what? How do you know the connection succeeds?

2. Whatever method you use, you will have a route to your ISP. Can you ping
the host at the other end of it? If not, what does ping report?

3. Your ISP will have given you an IP address for a default gateway. Can you
ping it? If not, what does ping report?

4. We also need to see the output of
                ifconfig -a
                route -n

... and maybe more, depending on the details of your connection type.

You *probably* do not have a problem specific to your e-mail. When *nothing*
works, the problem is connectivity, not a specific service.

One thought ... might this be a DNS problem? You have been trying to ping
actual IP addresses not somehostname.somedomainname, right?
