I don't know how to fix it, but I had the same thing
happen recently.  The NIC was an SMC Ultra something-
or-other, set (by jumper on card) to 0x280.  ifconfig
showed it as being at 0x290, IIRC.  If was either 0x270
or 0x290, but anyways, it was off.  I don't know whether
it worked correctly or not, was just checking to see
if it was "alive", as I picked it up for a mere $0.25.
