As Richard said, Slackware can certainly fit this.  Also Debian is pretty
good at it as well.  They are both quite good at allowing you to finetune
which packages you want and which you don't want.  Though last time I used
Slack it still had the better capability for a minimalist installation.

I've found it difficult to crash Linux.  I've had individual programs
go either spastic or catatonic on me, but the system as a whole just
kept chugging right along.

I've heard of it.  IIRC it's based on either Slack or Debian - not
sure which.

Is this an IBM PS/2 by chance?  If it is, try:
