The first thing I would ask is are you sure that the modem is on ttyS1?
Is it possible that it's actually on one of the other serial ports?
When you go into minicom, try using the actual /dev/ttySx devices instead
of going right for the symlink. Go through at least ttyS0 through ttyS3
to see if any of them respond.

Not even the exit key-combo gets you out? (hint - doing the <CTRL>-a z
sequence the program suggests above might help) In the (approximately)
3 years that I've been using Linux I've been forced into a reboot all
of about twice. If a program is misbehaving there's nearly *always* a
way out without rebooting.
