I ran the smbclient to fin the master browser and edited my
/etc/lmhosts file to reflect that. I can ping the master
browser on both my linux server and win98 client. The smbclient
came back with the shares, but also with the error
"Get read socket failed. ERRNO=Connection refused"

I tried running the command "nbtstat -R" but it came back as
command not found.

On my win98 machine, I tried \\netview ip-address (of master browser)
and it came back with the proper shares.

Is there any clean cut instructions on the 'net on how to do
this. Thanks a lot for the help.

O.K,
try this,
run ""smbclient -L HOSTNAME -Uusername%password" on your linux server,
where, HOSTNAME = a PC on the school LAN with somthing shared.
username%password is your login on details for the school LAN

You should get a list of shares on that host, the browse list, (available
hosts)
and at the end the workgroup and the name of the master browser.

find out the ip address of the master browser.

on your PC ping the master browser.
rename your lmhosts file, and make a new one that contains

#host ipaddr option
masterbrowsername xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx #PRE

run nbtstat -R (reloads cache)
run "net view \\ masterbrowsername."
you should get a list of the shares, there is no reason why not :)

That said, you can tell me the error..!

Have fun,
