Well yes it can be so done, however as you say it is by no means trivial.
I myself have 2 ethernet cards, one solely serving my cable modem, the
other serves the local lan.
Cheap, easy and more secure, + the fact that a 2 or 3 line firewall script
is enough to satisfiy all the local lan and keep out unwanted visitors.
