After I added two following lines to /etc/rc.d/rc.local

/sbin/insmod parport
/sbin/insmod parport_pc

a continuous beep from the printer (if the printer is switched on
*before* Linux is booted) disapear somewhere at the end of Linux boot
(actually just before the graphical login screen appears), and/or there
is no such beep at all and the printer is initialized properly (if it is
switched on *after* Linux is up and running). Btw, the printer's offline
configuration was not changed this time.
