John,
  What I might suggest is looking at the actual address assigned to your
Linux box serving as a router.  It looks like you want a Class C address,
but it looks like the Linux box is borrowing all 8 bits for your network
address, leaving no available bits for your host.
  Does the address of the Linix box fall within the range of 192.0.0.x to
223.255.255.x?  If the IP address is out of this range, Linux might
recognize it as a different address class.
