An IDE interface can die just as a H/D can die, suddenly or steps by step,
its just that an IDE interface does not die as often as a H/D, however it
does happen.

Like Ray said in his post, the power supply could also be a problem, they
too get old and decreped, they play tricks, ALL swichting power supplys
play tricks when they get older, components suffer from changing values.

Lawson said about cables, they get stiff from heat in the box itself, in
turn that means the internal capasity changes, not that that will induce
the Lost interrupt error which you have seen, having said that it just
might. ( SCSI cables suffer from just that. but that is NOT an issue here)
Dust in a box is a killer after a while, espesialy between cable
socket and connector, any plug and socket which conveys voltage/current
will sooner or later lose its conductance capasity get warm and disscolored
(black or dark to say the least) and produce poorer and poorer results.

Of course all of what i have just written is true and very unlikely to be a
cause of your problem, however who knows, your problem is (or at least 90%
sure) a hardware problem.
