The 'host' is your ISP. Look where it calls for filling-in 'host' and
fill in the name of your host. In my case: 'cebu'weblinq'com'

The 2 above errors combined make me think that you call a 'host' but you
use the wrong 'host': You filled-in a name that is not your ISP. Could be
 a spelling-error or incomplete.

Are you editing a script or entering the host-name in another way?

Did you manage to logon? (to your ISP?)
Did you get a string of garbage after that?

Minicom and pppd have the same 'job description'. They are doing the same
thing.
But Minicom is manual while pppd can be run from scripts.

The calling-ISP-modem-noises you get with pppd are identical to WINxx .

To get the modem to work you have to tell the program where the modem is.
If you get no modem noises you never got to dialing. Work on getting modem
 noises first.
(what I wrote at the beginning does not apply till after you get modem noises.)

Helping you is like configuring Linux with a blank screen, except for
this one line: pppd: unknown host: *

(not much .... dont know if you are in the shell, just after you
typed 'root' and 'yourpassword', or have already typed 'startx')

How far you got with modem setup?
Are you working from the shell cmd-line or from the X-window (startx)?
I have RH 5.0 . I set my modem under X-window. I get a control-panel
with 'modem' 'networking' an a bunch more. Under 'modem' I set the
serial port that the modem is connected to: Com1 COM2 com3 or com4
(the Linux equivalent of it, both com and cua0(?) thru 3 are shown
  in my case).
