The system that I am working on right now (HP-UX) uses the technique you
describe to make nightly backups.  They have lvsplit, lvmerge utilities to
split and re-attach logical volume mirrors.  Pretty useful. 

But, they don't mount the split mirror volumes at this place.. they just
use the dump utility to copy the split volumes to tape.
