I have pretty much the same thinking as you do. Linux is very hardware
picky, but once it is satisfied with the hardware it runs on, it runs
very stably.

Our Windows NT4 (which has already been replaced by Linux) and
Netware3.12 (whose file-server services are also being replaced by SAMBA
too) ran on several IWill P55XUB mainboards without any problem.
However, Slackware 3.5 (kernel 2.0.34) boot disks can not even boot on
these boards. I then switched Linux to IBM Netfinity 3000 and this box
has been stably providing several server services in RAID5 for about 5
months.
