As a rule of thumb, they use to be less flexible, but easier to
maintain/install. Hot-swapping capabilities is another fact.
I don't know how reliable is w/ SW Raid with the two drivers that support
on the fly addition/removal of devices, AIC7xxx and ncr/sym53c8xx,
assuming you use SCA/SCA2 disks/carriers.
Regarding perfomance, YMMV, but by now, AFAIK the linux scsi
middle-layer is a bottleneck, and throughput must be better using HW. Not
on syncronization speed, where SW raid beats HW easily...
