Dear Mr. Garloff
here in short words my problem:
The system is configured with a SCSI card DC-2974 PCI that is used only
to drive a Cd Burner.
I had a Yamaha CRW 2260 and that system was working fine using the
original Debian kernel 2.0.34 and also the latest 2.0.36 recompiled in
order to optimize the drivers (AM53C974) and the sound card (AWE 64).
Unfortunately the burner decided not to work anymore and I returned it
to the Yamaha assistance that decided to exchange the unit with the last
model the CRW4416S (WOW!). But since I installed the unit all the
problems begun.
The kernel that I was using (2.0.36) did crashed during the SCSI
initialization giving up with a Timeout error. Strangely the original
2.0.34 kernel was able to initialize the controller and recognize the
device properly. The rest of the kernels partly crashed giving a dump of
the registers, partly worked without detecting the CD burner, like if
the controller was "standalone".
At this point I decided to pass to the new 2.2.1 kernel becouse it
supported better the disk I/O and also to see if the new driver was able
to solve the problem (I cannot stay all my life with Linux 2.0.34!!).
I went through the documentation and found that the new, supported,
driver for my SCSI card was the "tmscsim", I recompiled the kernel using
this driver but the results were that the controller was recognized but
not the CD burner.
As far as I can see it is a software problem (the controller and the
burner work fine also under Windows 95) and I think that it depends from
the timeout used to detect the scsi devices (this unit seems to take
longer to initialize). I have tried to use the commands to the
/proc/scsi/tmscsim/0 in order to "reset" the unit and I could see that
the burner lights flash as when it is resetted, but still I cannot see
the burner detected.
The unit has SCSI ID = 5. The included attachments are:
Output of dmesg for the Linux 2.0.34 and for Linux 2.2.1, output of the
/proc/scsi/scsi, output of /proc/scsi/DRIVER/0 and the configuration
used to build the kernel 2.2.1 (created from make xconfig).
I hope to hear from you soon. I feel very down but somehow I have to
solve this situation. By the way have tou an idea of what components are
installed in the original 2.0.34 kernel? Becouse it could solve my
problems if I could succeed to rebuild the 2.2.1 with the same
components (maybe there is some synergy between different drivers that
make the whole system work in spite of some peculiarity of my current
configuration).
Thank you so much.
