Although late, here's my three cents:

My Tekram DC-390 looks like:
00:0b.0 SCSI storage controller: Advanced Micro Devices 53c974 [PCscsi] (rev 10)
Why are you recommending against the Tekram DC-390? It's a cheap,
reliable controller with extensive BIOS settings unseen on ANY
SYM53C810A. The Tekram BIOS is much more flexible than any SDMS
implementation that I've seen so far. The driver is well-supported (Hi,
Kurt!) and reliable. Never had any difficulties so far. Though,
admittedly, I only use non-mainstream devices like scanners and tape
drives with that. So, what are your objections to the DC-390 and what
are your recommendations in favor of the SYM53C810A based upon?

I have a 390U which uses the same chip, but only with 8-bit wide buses.
Ultra SCSI, 20 MByte/s. Supported by the sym53c8xx driver which is said
to have better performance. Never compared that to the ncr53c8xx
driver, however, just switched, it worked, I stuck with the sym driver.
(only applies to 2.2 kernels)

All Tekram boards are Tekram-designed AFAIK, just that these 395 series
happen to use a Tekram ASIC instead of Symbios (now LSI) or AMD chips.

Tekram has promised with their very first product announcement that
Linux drivers had been in development, so "no Linux support" is a wrong
claim.
