Is my cable bad?

Hi all,
I have 7 disks (rather old 1 gigs & 2gigs) on a bus (aha2710 if I remember 
correctly). I'm experiencing ramdom timeouts on the bus, especially under 
heavy load. The cable has the disk connectors only 5 cm apart. Is that too 
little? It is ~2.5m total length.
