Yes, if you drive supports it, which I think it does.

  labash@lou1:~ > mt -v
  mt-st v. 0.5b

compression Off
  labash@lou1:~ > mt compress 0

compression On
  labash@lou1:~ > mt compress 1

Note: My compression LED doesn't come On/Off until tape is written.

As you can see I use "mt-st" rather than GNU's "mt", it has more
features and was written by Kai the maintainer of "st".

Kai's mt-st compiles/installs right out of the box, recommended.
