I've been getting weird ncr53c8xx problems also. In fact, I've had to
reinstall linux because I got back from work today, and found my hard
drive (seagate Model: ST39173W) completely wiped out of any data,
including the partition tables. I was running kernel 2.2.13, redhat 5.2.
and the tekram DC-390F.

After re-installing linux (redhat 5.2),
I'm getting the message below in my log files:

------------------------BEGIN---------------------------------
Swansea University Computer Society IPX 0.34 for NET3.035
IPX Portions Copyright (c) 1995 Caldera, Inc.
Appletalk 0.17 for Linux NET3.035

ncr53c875-0-<0,0>: extraneous data discarded.
ncr53c875-0-<0,0>: COMMAND FAILED (9 0) @00ff2820.

Swansea University Computer Society IPX 0.34 for NET3.035
IPX Portions Copyright (c) 1995 Caldera, Inc.
Appletalk 0.17 for Linux NET3.035
-----------------------END------------------------------------

Has anybody had this problem? What would cause such a thing to happen?

I sent out the message below a week or so ago; then, I was using the
sym53c8xx driver. But the total data wipe-out happened when I switched
back to using the ncr53c8xx driver.

I've a SEAGATE Model: ST39173WC Rev: 6244, using the tekram dc-390F
scsi controller, with the sym53c8xx driver that comes with linux-kenerl
2.2.12. I've been getting the following messages in my logs, and I
don't know how to interprete them, and if it is a problem occuring, what
to do to fix it?

If anybody can enlighten as to why I'm getting total data wipe-outs, and
these error messages, please help. It is a very discomforting thought to
realize that these errors might lead to another data wipe-out.

Thanks

Robert Johannes
