While I haven't been closely following those threads as stated before,
it seemed to me that this fault caused major annoyance and also some
data loss, but not entirely cleared disks. But OTOH, if something fails
really badly, and is going to nuke your block #0, gee. IDE subsystems
are fragile sometimes, but SCSI subsystems (apart from Adaptec
1540/1542) seem pretty stable as far as I can tell.
You should contribute your experiences to linux-kernel, if there are
any, which - I know - may be difficult with a wiped disk unless you have
your syslog running across your network, and logging to a different
machine.
