I'm running RH 6.0 and need to upgrade my glibc to allow me to use
JAVA 1.2 (Blackdown). Do I just need to replace the glibc lib file or
is there more to it? Thanks for any help.

Subject: Mounting CDROMs
Date: Mon, 21 Aug 2000 02:25:45 GMT

Hi,

I have spent the last few hours trying in vain to fix my CD drive
problems. The good new is that I got my CDRW drive to work with
IDE-SCSI stuff (from someone else's post here)!

The bad news is that I can't get my other CD drive to mount anymore.
Following is my fstab file and when I try to mount my CDROM (hdd - a
Creative 48X), I get an Input/Output error.

/etc/fstab:

/dev/hda1 /windows vfat user,exec,conv=binary 0 0
/dev/hda2 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/hda3 / ext2 defaults 1 1
/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto sync,user,noauto,nosuid,nodev,unhide 0 0
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0
/dev/hdd /cdrom auto user,nosuid,exec,nodev,ro 0 0

Thanks in advance,

Andrew

Subject: XFree86 4.01 in framebuffer mode
Date: Mon, 21 Aug 2000 02:27:50 GMT

   I have a digital LCD monitor (IBM T55D) and a strange, incompatible
variant of a Matrox G200 graphics card that came with it. I've
successfully used both with XFree86 3.3 but now I'm trying to get them
to work on a new RedHat 6.2 installation with XF86 4.01 in framebuffer
mode (fbdev device). I think I'm getting close, but still no first
light. Below are the full error output and my XF86Config, but to
summarize, this is where the troubles start:

(**) (null)(0): claimed PCI slot 1:0:0
(II) FBDev(0): using default device
(**) FBDev(0): Depth 32, (--) framebuffer bpp 32
(EE) FBDev(0): Weight given (000) is inconsistent with the depth (32)
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

Fatal server error:
no screens found

   If anyone who's succeeded in getting XF86 4.0 to work in framebuffer
mode could post their XF86Config, or give any other tips, I would be
indebted.

  Thanks,

  TTX

Subject: Slow Login?
Date: Mon, 21 Aug 2000 02:30:41 GMT

Hi,

I run Mandrake 7.0 and just this afternoon my logins have started taking
/forever/. The only changes I have made (I can't pinpoint exactly when
it occurred) are:

1. I got my CDRW drive working with IDE-SCSI (is it "emulation"?)

2. I changed my /etc/hosts file so that my computers on my network have
names

3. I screwed up my CDROM mounting abilities with /etc/fstab

My system still boots as fast as it used to but now when I login (either
root or myself), it gets past the login prompt (GUI) and then sort of
hangs. I have tried pressing a few keys during this hang (which lasts ~
30 - 60 s) but it doesn't help (although caps lock and num lock do
function - I thought maybe they wouldn't like in Windows during a
hang). My hard drive isn't being accessed during the delay either.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Andrew

Au contraire. X does not run in tty7. X normally runs in tty1 (unless
started in one of the other virtual terminals). You can "hot-key" back
to the X display using alt-F7, but that doesn't mean that it's
"running in tty7".

I am another that is having a problem with the
ATI Rage Fury Pro 32 Mb which has the Rage 128 chip set.
A search of dejay shows that others are having this problem.
It looks like the next release of RedHat (ver. 7.0?) will have
support for this video card.

Subject: Re: CD writer setup question
Date: Sun, 20 Aug 2000 20:20:24 -0700

I got my redhat 6.x to use my CD-Writer. Adjust accordingly for your linux
distribution:
.
$ su -
password: <scret>
# cp /etc/conf.modules /etc/conf.modules.bak
# vi /etc/conf.modules

Modify conf.modules for your CDROM writer, my CDROM is located at /dev/hdc

Here is my conf.modules

alias scd0 sr_mod
alias scsi_hostadapter ide-scsi
options ide-cd ignore=hdc

# cp /etc/rc.d/rc.local  /etc/rc.d/rc.local.bak
# vi  /etc/rc.d/rc.local

Put this at the end of the rc.local
# load ide-scsi module
insmod ide-scsi

# cp /etc/lilo.conf /etc/lilo.conf.bak
# vi /etc/lilo.conf

put the append statement for /etc/lilo.conf your cdrom
'append="hdX=ide-scsi"' and run lilo.
Here is /etc/lilo.conf, my CDROM is located at /dev/hdc

boot=/dev/fd0
timeout=100
message=/boot/message
prompt
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.14-6.1.1
        label=linux
        root=/dev/hda4
        append="hdc=ide-scsi"
        read-only

# /sbin/lilo

Now relink the /dev/cdrom to your scsi emulation of your cdwriter

# mv /dev/cdrom /dev/cdrom.bak
# ln -s /dev/scd0 /dev/cdrom

Reboot. (I don't know how to restart with new conf.modules and rc.local
in linux :( )

Run dmesg to see if your scsi emulation is working after the reboot

# dmesg

 Exceed will present whatever the
user has chosen as thier default window manager. First reconfigure the
users settings to bring up Gnome on login and then logging in from Exceed
should work the same.

X11 tries to lookup the localhost, and if you took that out of your

seeing.

Subject: Linux fdisk only reads 1024 cylinders
Date: Mon, 21 Aug 2000 03:52:09 GMT

I got a new 30GB HD a couple of weeks ago.
I installed Win98 on that drive, but I still had
the old one (5.2GB) so I set it as a slave drive
and installed Red Hat 6.2 on it.

It installed ok, but the problem is that linux
does not see 5.2GB but 2.7GB or something like
that
or 1024 cylinders.

I know you can only boot from the first 1024
cylinders of any disk but fdisk should at least be
able to see it.

Actually, I remember installing Red Hat before on
the 5.2GB drive when it was set as a master and it
read fine.

I've been trying since then and I can't find much
or maybe I'm not looking in the right places.

I'm relatively new to non-DOS based Systems so I
would appreciate all or any of the help you could
give.

thanks,
julio

 CD player to play a CD in my CDROM drive (ATAPI IDE).
 I think they are reading the tracks because the timer
 showing time elapsed is running but there's no sound.
 There is sound when reading files from the harddisk,
 e.g. playing mpeg3 files. I've tried using cdparanoia to
 retrieve tracks from the CD to wav files on the hard disk,
 and then playing the wav files with XMMS and this works.
 But how can I play tracks directly from the CD?

 For info, I'm using the ALSA driver. I've also checked the
 mixer, and the CD sound is maximum and not muted. I have a dual
 boot system, and the CD player in WIN98 does work.

 TIA

 T.
