Date: Thu, 16 Nov 2000 20:21:25 GMT

My machine is an older slower box (Pentium 100 Mhz, 64MB Ram, 1.5gig HD
space) and I'm wanting to install a newer distribution.

Does anyone have any suggestions on which one might be easiest on the
old hardware? I have RedHat 7 but that really doesn't do me much good
on the default 'workstation' setup. Could I perhaps use that
distribution but pick certain packages only? If so, which ones would
be necessary?

My goal is to play around with the latest desktop stuff in GNOME, so I
would at least one the GNOME environment and Sawfish.

Hello,

I'm having trouble setting up an NIS slave server. When I run 'ypinit -s

Any help would be appreciated!

Subject: Scanfile utility ?

From: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

For Linux, is there a utility (not grep) that will
scan a partition (say the root, /) for a string of
characters?

I wish for a utility that presents a screen with
fields for specifying: Examples
                       Partition(s) /
                Subset of partition *.txt
               String to search for secnews.netscape.com

and an output box showing all the files and
occurances of the string.

Being new to Linux, I have no idea if such a utility
exists. Is there one like this?

Easy enough.

1. su -
  -- enter root password
2. cd /etc
3. cp inittab inittab.save
4. edit inittab with favorite editor (vi inittab)
5. look for a line line "initdefault:3:"
6. change the "3" above to "5". Change *NOTHING* else.
7. Save the file.

The next time you boot, you should automatically get an X login screen.

Cheers,
Dave

Subject: Small network - do I need DNS?
Date: Thu, 16 Nov 2000 23:27:33 GMT

I've set up a small home network using RedHat ver 6. I can telnet, ftp
and get web pages from the Linux server from a Windows client. All
fairly easy to setup with the how-to's and man files.

However, I have to use the IP address, not the machine name to get
into the web server.
Do I need DNS to do this? I've been reading the how-to's and it is
obviouly a complicated subject. I don't know if I need this complexity
on such a small network.

I did set up the hosts file with the name and address -
192.168.1.1 localhost.localname linuxcomp

Is it a problem that the name localhost~ (the default on set up)
doesn't have a com or net top domain name? Do I need to change my
local machine name?

If I do need to get into DNS, is there a book or online guide that
anyone would recommend for a Linux newbie. I have a fair amount of
knowledge (A+ certifide) on Windows stuff.
Thanks

I think you still have to use grep. What do you mean under partition?
Under /, many other partitions are mounted. Would you like to exclude
them? Anyways, the solutions would be to find all the files which you
want to search, say *.txt, and grep them.

find / -mount -name \*.txt -exec grep -l secnews.netscape.com {} \;

I didn't check this command, but something like this would accomplish
your requirements.

Thanks for reading...

I've just completed an install of RH7 on my notebook and can't talk to my
network (Win 2000). As I'm a newbie to Linux I'm stuck.

Text-based install was used and there were no prompts for DHCP, IP, Mask,
etc.

As far as I'm aware there should be a NETWORK option available in CONTROL
but there is none. I've run lsmod, dmesg, ifconfig. Between them I can see
that my Netgear FA410TX card is configured ok as an NE2000 using irq3,
0x300. The adapter pings ok.

I do not know where to go to enter network configurations to get this up.
ANY help would be greatly appreciated.

i'm having a lot of trouble... each distribution i attempt to install locks
up at one point or another (i've tried redhat 6.2, corel 2d ed., and
icepack). i also tried turbolinux server 6.0 lite which displayed L1
repeatedly on my screen or just once in the upper left corner, depending on
which installation attempt we're talking about... i've repartitioned,
reformatted, cleaned out the first sector (or whatever you call it where
LILO is installed), etc. more times than i can count, so i don't think
that's the problem.

can i run linux on this machine or is it just somehow not compatible with
that os? if there is some compatibility problem, how can i remedy it? if
linux won't work on this machine -- is there some other operating system
that will which is fairly accessible to a newbie but also more stable than

What is the best or even a solution?
Should I just set -up a married user and then poll for separate alias in the

If that does not work - try using a different dhcp client - sometimes it works with
@home with only pump / and sometimes with dhcpcd...

Try using one or the other from the command line and see what happens :

pump -h CC661256-B -i eth0

or

dhcpcd -h CC661256-B -i eth0

My understanding is that tape drives are considered byte/character devices,
not block devices, and therefore cannot be mounted.

At work, I have an old Pentium 90, 64MB RAM, 2GB of disk space spread over 4
drives, running Slackware 7.1. Works great for me as a web/ftp/Samba

Ah, now you're getting into some problems (sort of). X on a P100 is going
to be relatively sloooowwww. Not horribly, but not any where near being
snappy, either. I can stand it on my P100, but I don't do it very often.
I'm mainly a ssh/command-line interface kind of guy on that box.

There is no 'need' as long as you're happy manually maintaining all the
hosts files on all the systems. If you ever get unhappy about the amount of
effort entailed, then DNS would be where you want to go (and it will make a
nice learning experience for you).
