Hello all I just subscribed to the newsgroups after having attempted to
install Red Hat 7 on an Intel based PC. The trouble I am having is two
fold. I can't figure out if my ethernet card is being recognized as a
device by the OS. The card is a Netgear FA310. When the installation
prompted I chose to use DHCP. I am using this because I have a Linksys
Etherfast Cable/DSL Router. This is so my girlfriend can use her
Macintosh on our cable modem supported by Time Warner Road Runner. Two
other machines work with the Linksys correctly using DHCP. I am new to
Linux but would really like to move away from a Windows based environment.
Any help here would be great. Thanks.

Give this a try in the smb.conf file. This is what I'm using.

No, 2.2.17 is a stable version. The development versions have the
second number odd
(e.g.: 2.3.17)

I would check if /usr/src/linux is a symbolic link that points to
another directory, if that is the case you need to change the symbolic
link to the location of your new kernel and module sources (My SuSE
default installation, /usr/src/linux was a symbolic linnk that pointed
to /usr/src/linux-suse and because the compilation process would always
look for the sources for modules in /usr/src/linux/modules, my
compilation would fail, unless I changed the symbolic link)

I want to us vi as my command history editor.
I'm using the bash shell and I have put the following in my
.bash_profile file in my home directory.

set -o vi

It will not work when the file is sourced. I have to set it manually.
Do I not have this command in the right file? Any suggestions?

Winmodem is bad, you may need to get an external or ISA non-winmodem.

Built-in video no problem for command line linux, might not be supported
by X11 window system, but lots are, what chipset is it?

Wrong!, get a better book, two separate things, no problem getting ppp
running with a modem linux *can* use, X11 window not needed.

> What all can I do with this machine?

Lots of things: I run on a p166 w/96M ram no problem, X11, internet,
file and printer server, www server, ftp server, mail server, etc...

Lots of development systems and programming languages come with linux!
:)

You may need to get another modem, then no problem to get on the net.

Hi folks...

I have a server system that is currently dual boot, but am now using
it as a Linux server.

I have run out of space on both / and /usr and want to add some more
space by getting rid of the dos partitions and re-assigning them to
linux.

The output from fdisk -l is as follows.

Disk /dev/hda: 64 heads, 63 sectors, 621 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 4032 * 512 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hda1 * 1 620 1249888+ 6 FAT16

Disk /dev/hdb: 255 heads, 63 sectors, 1583 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hdb1 * 1 13 104391 83 Linux

/dev/hdb9 1100 1583 3887698+ 6 FAT16

Disk /dev/hdc: 255 heads, 63 sectors, 527 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hdc1 * 1 255 2048256 b Win95 FAT32

/dev/hdc6 512 527 128488+ 82 Linux swap

As you can see most of hdc is dos as is hda.

Now, how do I do this without killing the current linux stuff? How do
I move my linux stuff to make more room too?

The output from df is

Filesystem 1k-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/hdb1 101089 91150 4720 95% /

I am having problems with using the promise fasttrak66 with slackware.
I have a fasttrak66 with two identical drives striped. I want to install
slackware (on a drive on my regular IDE) but the cd wont boot up all the
way.
when I try booting with ata66.i it gets to
PDC20262: (U)DMA Burst Bit ENABLED Primary MASTER Mode Secondary
MASTER Mode.
    ide2: ...
and just hangs.
booting off the cd doesnt even get to this step.

I was wondering if anyone ever got this to work?
thanx

I'm having a hell of a time here. My kernel keeps dumping all over the
place and the computer just suddenly reboots from time to time. It all
started when I upgraded to redhat 7. I'm running the latest developement
kernel.
All of the kernel guys seem to think I have a hardware problem. I ran
memtest for a day with no problems at all.
I've got a PIII 550, Asus MB, Matrox G400 Marvel, 128 meg ram, SB Live,
IBM Token ring card, Haughpauge TV Tuner, ummm I think that's it. I'll
post some stuff from /proc to see if that helps. Here is a couple of the
errors I get when the kernel dumps too. At the bottom is the /proc stuff.
