IMHO get the one people use who you know to be willing to help in case
of problems. Yes, I do mean it, say ask your friends -- I'm not using
a distribution, so no preferences ;)

No, but more than one OS is the most troublesome case while a pure Linux
comes down to -- create all partitions, format, install, done. As a newcomer
I'd not bother too much about what the best partition scheme could be and
so on, as you can do a re-install later on.

Cheers,
Juergen

I have a box with two IDE drives. Lilo sits on hda and my
Linux partitions are on hdb. I want to remove the current hda and just
use the other drive. But I'm having trouble with the lilo setup.

Here's what I tried. I removed the first drive, set the jumpers on the
second and changed the bios settings. Then I booted from
a rescue disk. I mounted the second disk (now hda), edited lilo.conf
and ran lilo (with the appropriate -r argument). Lilo failed with the
message "Boot sector of /dev/hda doesn't have a LILO signature." Can
someone tell me what this message means and how I can make lilo happy?
Thanks.

To provide some more information you can get Findpart at

http://inet.uni2.dk/~svolaf/utilities.htm, do from DOS or Windows

findpart all +fat fp.txt

and post the content from fp.txt. Do not attach the file, since some
newsservers will filter that.

Hi all

I have to install a RH Linux system on a computer with a NE2000, respectively
an AMD PCnet NIC. Unfortunately there are no drivers available anymore on the
boot disks, nor on the additional "drivers.img".

Where could I find those drivers and how could I create such an additional
driver disk, which is loadable during the installation process?

Thanks for any help!

I just installed a new RH7 and am having trouble getting it connected to
the network.

On other RH systems I installed (6, 6.1 and 6.2) it picked my NICs up
during install, but that didn't happen this time. I have done a
complete install with both a D-Link and LynkSys card in the computer.

Both cards have been put into different slots and both always show the
green connection line, which also appears on the HUB -- so I know that
the two are talking to eachother... it is just RH that can't seem to see it.

I have no problem installing the NIC card "by hand", but I have not had
to do this before and am unsure of the procedure. Can some kind Linux
Guru please pass along any information that might help me install the card!

Many thanks!

StarOffice 5.2 for Linux: Multi-user Install Instructions.
===================================================

Having fun trying to install StarOffice 5.2 in multi-user mode?
Nice product - shame about the install instructions. Clear as mud.
After much messing about, here's how to do a multi-user install.
It's really very simple, when given proper instructions. This will allow
any user on a standalone PC to run StarOffice from their own accounts.

1: Assume you have the downloaded files in some directory (it doesn't
matter where, really) called, say, /home/fred/SO_tmp.

2: Login as root and, in a terminal window, cd to this directory.

3: If you downloaded Star Office as one big file, do:
     ./so-5_2-ga-bin-linux-en.bin -net

If you downloaded the 10 smaller files, do:
    ./so-5_2-ga-bin-linux-en-000.bin -net

4: During installation, change the default install directory from
/root/office52 to /usr/local/office52 (and let the installer create
this directory). Ignore warnings about Java and database files.

5: When this install is done, logout of root and login as a normal
    user (say: fred).

6: In a terminal window type: /usr/local/office52/program/setup
This will create a small (2.7Mb) office52 directory in fred's local
directory. It will also add a StarOffice menu item to fred's Personal
folder( K->Personal->StarOffice 5.2) from which you will normally
    start StarOffice.
During this local install, use the the default Installation Type
    (ie. Standard Workstation Installation).

7: Repeat step 6: for each user on the system. And that's it!!

Have fun!!

When using the presentation package, I want to print

The print options contain an Orientation option to switch

ALWAYS prints in landscape mode, even if I select Portrait.
Why is this? How can I print slides in Portrait mode?

It looks like your ISP terminated the
link because it was inactive for too long.
"terminated by peer" means they did it,
not you.

You will have to find out how long your
ISP lets a connection run without activity
before killing it. Mine allows 15 minutes.
Then you can set something up to ping or
fetch mail or whatever at shorter intervals,
or you can allow the line to drop and be a
good guy and not tie up one of their
connections if you really aren't using it.
(I don't know your true situation, that
isn't meant to be a nasty comment.)

Hello, I've set up ntpd on my desktop system and am trying to sync my

to debugging output shown below. However, it doesn't seem to complain
when given the IP of a public stratum 2 timeserver. ntpd on the desktop
was set up out of the box with a few IPs of public timeservers, no other
modifications than to put 'disable auth' in /etc/ntp.conf. Any ideas?

Date: Mon, 20 Nov 2000 01:04:38 GMT

Hi all

I tried to upgrade my Linux RH v6.1 to v7.0. First I tried it with rpm. This
basically broke my system because of all those libc dependencies. So I tried
it with the update software on the netboot floppy disk image. It loaded all
the new package information from the FTP server. But then, during the
comparison to the installed packages, it always crashes.

So my question is: How can I upgrade my whole system? How do I have to deal
with the libc family? Is there somewhere a detailled description how to
perform such an update?

Thanks for any help!

Notice. This is a "recieved " message-- it was your ISP who decided to
disconnect you due to timeout, not your machine. You cannot fix this
except by discussing it with your ISP ( why should he let you hog a line
you are not using?) or by making sure that the line is not idle.

I get this message as my computer is starting up.
The message goes something like this: starting
lpd.2000-11-19-15:24:24.17.694 Get_local_host:
hostname 'localhost.local' bad
I specified the the host name as:
localhost.local -- I have tried different things
like just putting in my name as the host and
different stuff like that. Nothing seems to work.
When shutting down the computer I also get
ldp [Failed]

Also when I try to ping anything -- from a
specific IP addess to a web site, it won't do it.

So now tried: route add default eth0
after I hit enter I see: Network Down
So do I have two problems, or just one and when I
fix the first one I mentioned, will it then
resolve all of this other stuff?

I still think the LFS is probably your solution. I can't imagine how you
will accomplish this without GCC and fitting that on a floppy will be fun.

If you use the LFS and modify to use mulitple partitions, you should end up
with what you want.
i.e.
install a distro in one partition.
make your system on another partition
reformat the distro partion, use it as your /usr or /home
with some forethought on partition sizes this is a very nice way to set
things up.

That's what I did. I couldn't find any info on maybe using 4.7#'s mimetypes.
But I'm having problems with that also.

If I want xmms to start when getting a feed from mp3.com for file type .m3u I
can't do it. Because when NS6 saves the mimetype it goes to M3U. Capitals.
I assume this is why it's not working because that's the only diff.

Netscape 6pr3 was better than the final. At least it was usable. 6 final
locks on me every time I hit the stop button. Also will not even connect
to secure web sites.

What a dissapointment.
