Try going into fdisk then toggling the bootable flag for /dev/hda1.
You'll need to do this from a rescue disk.

You might also try at the LILO prompt:
linux boot=/dev/hda1

Either the redhat installation will detect the processor type and
configure the kernel accordingly or you can manually rebuild the kernel
and select your processor type. either way, all the features are part of
the kernel source code and you don't have to "buy" or select an optimized
version...

If you can get them, download the NVIDIA SOURCE RPMS and rebuild those
and install, then follow nvidias instructions for manually configuring
xconfig files.

rpm --rebuild nvidia-kernel-0.97-src.rpm (or whatever the name is)
same with the GLX file... then install the rpm from the
/usr/src/redhat/rpms or similar folder where they are placed after
rebuild...

rpm -ivh /usr/src/rpms/nvidia-kernel-0.97-blah.rpm
dittio for GLX

You may want to go through on a generic driver and make sure the monitor
is set correctly first, then you shouldn't have to configure that part
anyway...

If you can't find the files, lower the spam shields and email me and I'll
e-mail you those files with a link to the nvidia instrucions for building
and configuring the packages..

I just installed Slackware 7.0 on a PC (named "Alpha") -
I've noticed in /var/log/messages
that entries appear every 20 minutes that look like:
<snip>
Apr 29 09:12:00 Alpha -- MARK --
Apr 29 09:32:00 Alpha -- MARK --
Apr 29 09:52:00 Alpha -- MARK --
<snip>

I've looked in crontab and my /etc/rc.d/ scripts and can't find an entry
that looks like it creates such an entry - and I can't find reference to it
elsewhere (such as ps -aux).

Can anyone tell me what's causing these entries or where else to look?
(this is really causing my messages log to fill up...)

syslogd is doing it on it's own. It's a timestamp option to let you know that
nothing's missing and syslogd is alive.

There's a configuration option (IIRC, a parameter to syslogd) that changes the
interval of these MARKs.

Same thing happened to me. This time it's a Mandrake 7.0 distribution. I'm
on a dual boot with Win 98 using LILO. My system runs smoothly for a few
weeks and then fails to boot.

I guess I have to reinstall linux again for the third time. The first 2
times my linux installation failed to boot was because of the partition
table getting corrupted. I can't understand why that happened.

Subject: lpr broken, instant error message

Does anyone care to guess why lpr exits instantly with error message
"Can't get official name for local machine" or something to that effect?

By "instant" I mean that lpr exits without even looking at its command
arguments -- if I use -v or -? or --help it doesn't matter.

The error seems bogus, as hostname and uname both return the machine name.
Could it be that I don't have TCP/IP installed (not sure if I do or not)?
Could it relate to missing module "char-major?"

This is an old 1997 Slackware distribution. I hope to upgrade in a few months,
but this question has been bugging me for a long time.

Long ago I fixed my /dev/lp1 to have write permission, so I can just cat files
directly to the printer (an HP DeskJet 500, wonderful workhorse for PCL3). But
this hack is denying me all those great filters in lpr. TIA, Mike K.

How true. I put a 1997 vintage Slackware set on my 20-Meg 486 with very few
problems. My machine was blessed with a CDROM drive and a Win95 partition, but
the instructions did tell how to use floppies. Of course you'd need access to
another PC with a CDROM.

Ironically, the first hurdle faced in installing any Linux is finding the right
CDROM driver! Not as bad as finding the right video driver when you go to X
Windows, but maybe you're better off without the CDROM :-) With only 8M RAM,
probably X is out.

Anyway, my 66 MHz 486 runs Slackware and X just fine, and does big C compiles
plenty fast for me. --Mike K.

Hello,

I've just purchased a new motherboard with an on-board AC97-soundchip.
Now I'm trying to figure out how I must setup my Linuxsystem (Debian 2.2
potatoe i386).

Following configuration:
- 800 MHz
- Elitegroup motherboard K7VZA-100 with VIA 82C686B chipset
- linux 2.2.17

I tried following soundmodules (in various combinations):
- ac97_codec
- sb
- sound
- soundlow
- soundcore

I also tried this one:
- via82cxxx

but when I load that module, the following happens:
/lib/modules/2.2.17/misc/via82cxxx.o: init_module: Device or resource busy
Hint: this error can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including
invalid IO or IRQ parameters
/lib/modules/2.2.17/misc/via82cxxx.o: insmod
/lib/modules/2.2.17/misc/via82cxxx.o failed
/lib/modules/2.2.17/misc/via82cxxx.o: insmod via82cxxx failed

the BIOS has an option to modify IRQ and IO-adresses, but I tried all
possible settings, the problem persists.

I hope that is enough information for someone who knows the solution.

Please help, I don't want to install Windoze just to play Quake3 with
sound! (am I a lamer, or what?)

Greetings
Alex

Hi,
any help from those more experienced than I would be appreciated. I
recently moved to mandrake 7.2 from an old copy of redhat. For the most
part, the transition has been painless, with the exception of my zip drive.

When I attempt to install 7.2 with the zip connected, it works great.
and initially, upon booting, the zip, and both cdroms (cd-rw, and cd-rom)
work fine. upon subsequent rebooting (dual boot with 98se on the secondary
hdd) kudzu reports that I no longer have a burner, nor a zip (and as a
result, no printer). From that point on, attempts to mount the zip result
in an I/O error.

Attempts to mount the cdrom reslt in either a report that /dev/hdc is
not a valid block device, or an i/o error accompanied by a small amount of
activity on the zip.

Any ideas? After mucking around with it a bit, I decided to just
reinstall, but the same thing happens. I'm almost ready to give up on my
zip, but it would be nice to have it, as every bit of space helps for those
of us not blessed with large hardware funds.

I have been tring all the sugestions I can find in the news groups, no luck.
Windoze clinets have no problem ftp'ing throught the linksys router, Linux
clients have no sucess ftp'ing through it.

My equipment...
3com ADSL Modem -> Linksys BEFSR41 router -> Red Hat 7.0 server.

I have tried the using DMZ and no DMZ with port forwarding.
Many news postings say to use PASV mode, so on the linux clinets I have
tried ftp -p and pftp both did not work.

I found one news posting that said to move my Linksys BEFSR41 router to Red
Hat 7.0 server cable from a switch to the router. It was...
Linksys BEFSR41 router -> 3com switch -> Red Hat 7.0 server.
now it is directly...
Linksys BEFSR41 router -> Red Hat 7.0 server
had no effect.

I found one news posting telling me to download logviewer from linksys and
read the logs, I searched the linksys site and could not find such a thing.

What now? Has anyone got a Linksys router like this to work with Linux ftp
clinets?

I've looked at fstab and mtab and they both seem to be ok.

mtab has,
/dev/hda6 /dos1 vfat rw, uid=500,gid=100 0 0

fstab has,
/dev/hda6 /dos1 vfat user,exec,dev,suid,rw, uid=500,gid=100
0 0

I didnt compare results with fdisk so I'll have to do that
when I get home. Since someone had already mentioned that
they
had no problem mounting a 30G partition it looks more like I
screwed something up in the partitioning. Since the
partition
is empty right now I'll just delete and try again paying
more
attention this time.

Thanks for the input!!

The 'xfs' server needs to be running prior to running X. You either
didn't installit, or the installer has a bug, or it isn't starting for
some reason. Try running `/etc/init.d/xfs start` to see if it comes
up properly.

Subject: shutdown problem

Hi,

Everytime I shutdown my computer ends up with the message:
input:inode 00:03/536871171 count wrapped.
I believe it is umount doing it but I don't know why.
I have to push reset to get it to stop and I get a message at startup about
the filesystem not being unmounted properly.
Does anyone know why I'm getting this error or where I can find info on what
it means?
