Well, it probably is easier said than done. The easiest thing is to look
at the partition info with fdisk. If fdisk shows that your boot
partition is entirely located within the first 1024 cylinders, then it
is impossible for your kernel to be outside that range (kind of a
negative-proof method).

Did you upgrade modutils? The old one won't work with the 2.4 kernel
(yet another thing that almost drove me nuts until I RTFM'd :).

What tool did you use to resize the Windows partition? I would suggest a
Windows boot disk with fips for that job. I hope you backed up your
(windows) data files first. This could get ugly. One thing that I see is
that your hda2 is under the 1024 cylinder limit, but you are attempting to
load from hda5.

Maybe you are trying too hard. I've got Win ME and SuSE 7.0 both installed
on my Gateway Solo 5300. I didn't bother with a separate "boot" partition.
I shrunk the Windows partition to ~6GB, leaving ~4GB for linux (casual linux
user). During setup, I didn't use FDISK, but rather the graphical
equivalent, and created three partitions: / about 1900MB, /home about 1900MB
and swap of about 150MB. When prompted, I allowed SuSE to install lilo.
Works great.

Note that I've also tried RedHat 7.0 and Mandrake 7.2 on this system. For
various reasons, I chose not to keep either of those distributions
installed, but they both installed and booted OK . . . no partitioning
problems.

I would suggest you remove ALL linux partitions, and try again, without the
separate boot partition, and give RH more control of the install (keep it
simple, no FDISK). It just might work.

But first thing you need to do is boot to a Windows (DOS) floppy disk and
try to copy any important data files from your Windows partition, before
they are gone forever. Good luck, -Dave

Hello,

I just upgraded from XFree 86 4.0.0 to 4.0.2 and the fonts that GNome
uses for all the buttons and menus and stuff no longer appears. I.E. all
menus pop up with nothing. I did not have this problem with 4.0.0. In
reading the docs for X11 I saw that not all fonts are supported, in
particular on my system Type1 and Speedo fonts are not getting loaded.
Is there someway I can change the font that gnome is using so I can see
the menus. I tried to do this under the control panel for gnome theme
manager, but the custom font there didn't change the fonts I'm talking
about. Or better yet, anybody know a work-a-round for fixing the Xft so
I can load my Type1 and Speedo fonts?

Thanks

    Well good news and bad news...

Good News:

I got the new kernel working. I actually had to replace the symlinked
System.map from the old map to the new map file.

Bad News:

I am gonna have a hell of a time getting updating my modules unless there is
a faster way of doing it...

Subject: LILO problems
From: Samuel Padgett <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Date: Sun, 21 Jan 2001 15:04:54 GMT

Recently, I attempted to upgrade my Debian (unstable) system to the
2.4 kernel. After rebooting, however, LILO freezes after printing two
only two letters, `LI'.

I checked around on the web a bit and found this means that the second
stage boot loader failed to execute often due to a disk geometry
problem. I tried adding the lines `lba32' and `linear' to my
/etc/lilo.conf, then running `lilo -v'. Neither worked. I even tried
uninstalling and reinstalling lilo, which didn't help.

I'm really at the end of my wits here, and any help would be greatly
appreciated. Anyone know how I can resolve this probem? Perhaps I
can use another boot loader?

Here is my /etc/lilo.conf:

lba32
boot=/dev/hda6
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot-menu.b
prompt
timeout=150
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.0
    label=2.4.0
    root=/dev/hda6
    read-only
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.18pre21
    label=2.2.18pre21
    root=/dev/hda6
    read-only

Here is the output of `df':

sam@harpo:~$ df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/hda6             3.2G  917M  2.1G  30% /
/dev/hda5              15M  2.7M   11M  19% /boot
/dev/hda7             973M  7.5M  915M   1% /home
/dev/hda9             1.3G  989M  375M  73% /d
/dev/hda10            1.3G  978M  386M  72% /e

Thanks for your help!

I'm experiencing the same thing, whether it's on a RH 6.2 or 7.0,
telnet or OpenSSH 2.x, from a Windows host with PuTTY or SecureCRT.
The host is a desktop Dell.
Since I have no problem when working with other RH 6.2 servers we have
at work, I have no idea what is causing this on that Linux test host.
I was thinking of a bug in the network driver.

It happens much earlier than you (even 5 minutes, whether I'm typing
stuff or not). Somebody mentioned parameters in /etc/profile, but
nothing in there that looks like auto-logout. I also checked
/etc/bashrc, but no more luck. Weird, and a pain in the butt.

Hi E J! Thanks for your message:

I still can't make it work... :-( Am I missing something or
is it that this procedure doesn't work with my particular
setup?

This is what I did:

I'm installing dual boot with Win2K

Hmmm... I don't find that option in Windows 2000. But I guess it
has nothing to do? (I mean, as long as I don't change anything in
the hardware...)

> Add this line to your /etc/modules.conf

> #-----end of my modules.conf

Done.  No changes  :-(

The values on my machine are: io=0xaaf0 irq=9. The only strange
thing is that Winodows reports a range for the IO -- AAF0 to ABFF,
or something like that. Should I somehow tell Linux the exact range?
Or the base address should suffice? (what would be the syntax in
such case? Something like io=0xaaf0-0xabff ?)

Thanks for your message! And thanks in advance for any other
ideas!

I have the impression you are missing a couple of lines...look at mine:
# LILO Konfigurations-Datei
# Start LILO global Section
boot=/dev/hda5
#compact # faster, but won't work on all systems.
vga = normal # force sane state
read-only
prompt
timeout=100

disk = /dev/sda
  bios = 0x80
disk = /dev/hda
  bios = 0x81
disk = /dev/hdb
  bios = 0x82
disk = /dev/hdc
  bios = 0x83

# End LILO global Section

default=caldera

#
image = /boot/vmlinuz
  root = /dev/hda5
  label = Linux

# Added by TreLOS for Win4Lin kernel
image = /boot/win4lin
label = win4lin
root = /dev/hda5

# Caldera
image = /boot/vmlinuz-pc97-2.2.14-modular
#image = /dev/hdc1
#range=1+512
label = caldera
root = /dev/hdc1

You don't have disk=????
you don't have a default=

Also when fooling around with those sorts of things it's a good idea before
you change things to make a resuce disk form the original booting system,
at least then you can get back in a adjust.
Hope this helps, Brian

I do not know if this will help, but I had the same problem when I
recompiled
my 2.4.0 kernel on RH7.

I could not boot the linux partition on my HD. I inserted the linux
install CD and entered rescue mode. I mounted my linux partition and edited
the /etc/lilo.conf file to point to my old kernel.

Then I copied the lilo.conf file on the linux partition to my "rescue
partition" in
/etc

Then I ran lilo with the -r option to specify the device that lilo should
write on.
eg. lilo -r /dev/hda2

When I rebooted the system my linux partition started as normal and I could
experiment
with new kernels again...

I don't know if this helped.. or if I misunderstood your question
completely..

Oops.. forgot something.. this is wrong..
you should run lilo -r /mnt/...

StarOffice 5.2, if you are not impatient. It has fine Filters for .doc and
.xls. Applixware is much faster and works quite reliable for me. WP-Suite
runs on wine, therefore it is not fast and surely not stable.
