YES, IT IS TRUE!
External modems are self sufficient (hardware wise) to perform the
mod/demod duties and need only relevant commands and info from serial
port.
Serial port commands are standard for all OS's.

I haven't had any problems using the RH6.2 updates on my system.

In YaST2 under "Current printer's settings" if you select paper size:, and
then tab to the lower box, you should be able to select paper size.

Make sure that the printer settings on the remote are correct. I thought
that filtering was done on the remote, but the YaST2 setup sets up a
prefilter.

I [test] printed locally in SuSE 7.1, then switched the printer cable to a
Mandrake box and printed remotely to that with the [test] in YaST2. Both
copies were identical with 1/2" and 1" borders in from the edge all
around.

That is NOT an error, it's a warning. I had an ATi Mach64 card that
gave the exact same message in the log file every time X was started up
or shut down. The card worked.

If you are having problems getting X to work, then we need more
information. The real problem almost certainly lies above the "errno =
111" line if that line exists, and one RedHat-specific problem that many
people have with X is that the font server isn't started. Again, we
need more information.

Subject: Using LILO and modules.conf for boot hardware profiles?
Date: Sun, 15 Apr 2001 05:00:25 GMT

I have a problem where I can get my scsi interfaced scanner to work
but when I add the functionality of my IDE CDR, it breaks the scanner.
Being a newbie, I'm not sure why but my guess is that it seems to get
the CDR to work, one needs to tell the system to ignore it as an IDE
device and fool it into thinking it is some type of scsi device. In
any event when it is enabled, I can't use the scanner.

To switch back and forth, it would seem that I would have to manually
edit the lilo.conf and modules.conf file and reboot. I noticed that
the modules.conf file has scripting/batch command functionality with
conditional statements available. Is there any way I can pass a value
or set some kind of global/environment value from LILO so that the
modules.conf can determine which boot configuration I have chosen and
load/not load the appropriate modules/parameters?

Thanks

3com/USR 2977 works OK with RH7. If you have Kernel 2.4.3 the Serial
Driver will auto detect it.

It appears that there is a driver for the HSF, but not for the HCF.

Subject: Current status of Frame Buffer devices - consoles and X?

Hi,

I have a Matrox G400 AGP video card and am interested in using the frame
buffer device. I have read the Framebuffer-HOWTO but the section on the
X-Server doesn't cover XFree86 v4. If I am to use the frame buffer, I
would like to do so *exclusively* using the kernel's built-in hardware
support for the Matrox G400 to avoid potential low-level conflicts
between Linux and X.

Has anyone configured their Linux box this way? How fast is the
X-server? The kernel does claim to support "acceleration", but how good
is it compared to X's? Also, how stable is everything because I have
heard tales of hard lock-ups when switching between X and virtual
consoles?

I am assuming that XFree86 + the fbdev driver + the kernel's
"matroxfb_accel.o" module is functionally equivalent to XFree86 + the
mga driver. Is this true? After all, an unaccelerated X-server would be
no fun at all ... :-)

Thanks in advance for any information,
Cheers.
Chris

installing packages from CD#1 .. I recently tried 8.0 Beta 2.. It locked
shortly after installing packages from CD#2 .. This is a hard lock. I
have to shut my system off.. Reset and CTRL+ALT+DEL do not work.. I've
asked Mandrake and a few Linux news groups. No one seems to have a clue.
Could the lock up have something to do w/the EC10 problem on version 1.1
MB's??? I've noticed that occassionally my machine will just lock up.. I
duel boot between WIn2K Professional and Mandrake(or at least I used to)..

Hello,

I'm running AHA2940 & SuSE since ~5 years and never had any problems?

This is from my current SuSE 7.0 setup:

lspci | grep SCSI
00:0b.0 SCSI storage controller: Adaptec AHA-294x / AIC-7871 (rev 03)

lsmod | grep aic
aic7xxx               128504   6

cat /etc/lilo.conf
boot    = /dev/sda
vga     = normal
read-only
prompt
timeout = 30

  image  = /boot/vmlinuz
  label  = linux
  root   = /dev/sdb3
  initrd = /boot/initrd

  image  = /boot/vmlinuz.suse
  label  = suse
  root   = /dev/sdb3
  initrd = /boot/initrd.suse

grep INITRD_MODULES /etc/rc.config
INITRD_MODULES="aic7xxx"

My / is on SCSI, but it doesn't matter if I build aic7xxx in the kernel
or use initrd,
it'll work anyway.

Yup. I tried several different kernel options and nothing's worked so far.
I'm working my way back to the slow generic IDE drivers one driver at a
time, but the computer I'm working on is rather slow and complete compiles
