Using: RedHat Linux 5.1 (until i can download the upgrad which hasn't been
working either), HP 533mhz, 64MB RAM, 20GB, etc etc

well, I've successfully (and by successful I mean not) managed to partition my
hard drive into two separate allocations of memory. I did this in DOS using
fips.exe. Before I even begin to tell of my problems with creating partitions
in Disk Druid, let me begin by saying that when I check the 'Properties' of
this new 5GB hda I am perturbed by Windows' graphical blue cylinder which
wields the sentences "Free Space 0 bytes" "Used Space 0 bytes". Added to
this is the 5GB missing from the other hda with now only contains 15GB,
partially used by Windows.

Moving on to Disk Druid, I can make the Swap Partition...hell, I can even make
partitions for subdirectories, but I am unable to create a linux root
partition-- each and every time I receive this blasted error message: 'Root
partition too big'.

Could someone..anyone..please help me with this. I would be greatly indebted.
Thanks,
sean

Repeat using instead of using xconfig, use config or menuconfig.
I use menuconfig. Delete your /lib/modules/<kernel version>
before doing modules_install.

I think you need at least two (2) machines running for samba to

Try, AFTER you read what I copied from the Configure.help(2.4.4)!!!!!

mount -t ntfs /dev/your_M$_partition /home/fred/box
(as root)
'man mount' for more info

However, you need ntfs support in the kernel.

from /usr/src/linux/Documentation/Configure.help

NTFS support (read only)
CONFIG_NTFS_FS
NTFS is the file system of Microsoft Windows NT. Say Y if you want
to get read access to files on NTFS partitions of your hard drive.
The Linux NTFS driver supports most of the mount options of the VFAT
driver, see Documentation/filesystems/ntfs.txt. Saying Y here will
give you read-only access to NTFS partitions.

This code is also available as a module ( = code which can be
inserted in and removed from the running kernel whenever you want).
The module will be called ntfs.o. If you want to compile it as a
module, say M here and read Documentation/modules.txt.
--
NTFS write support (DANGEROUS)
CONFIG_NTFS_RW
If you say Y here, you will (maybe) be able to write to NTFS file
systems as well as read from them. The read-write support in
NTFS is far from being complete and is not well tested. If you
say Y here, back up your NTFS volume first since it may get
damaged. Also, make sure to run chkdsk from within Microsoft
Windows NT after having performed any writes to a NTFS partition
from Linux to detect any problems as early as possible.
Please note that write support is limited to Windows NT4 and
  earlier versions.

  If unsure, say N.

Good luck

*** post for FREE via your newsreader at post.newsfeeds.com ***

I have RedHat Linux 6.2. Can someone help with the following problem?
When my Pc boots up, Kudzu starts and says that it wants to remove my
Cd-rom drive from my system, but I can't seem to get it to add the CD,
or recognize it.

When I try to mount the CD after logging in , I get a message that says
something like this:
"/dev/cdrom is not a recognized as a block device" or something very
similar."

The strange thing is, I used to run Red Hat Linux 5.2, and I could
mount Cd's fine under 5.2, but 6.2 seems to want to remove the drive
from the system.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

I have just installed Linux Mandrake 8.0 with the lnx4win option,
the system starts but just freezes when I click on an icon, I have
tried mandrake 7.2 with the lnx4win setup and that worked fine but
with this new version there seems to be nothing inside the
uninstall.bat and the uninstall.pif or the lnx4win or any visible
means of deleting it from my system.

If I delete the folder then grub will still be left how can I get rid
of this grub? or really how can I delete Linux

Make sure that /etc/passwd is not missing, and if it isn't missing, it

I generated the above error messages by running "make boot" instead of "make bzImage"
for kernel-2.4.2-2.

I just downloaded source for kernel 2.4.5 and build the kernel as per in that
reference. The build of the kernel was successful. But when i reboot it, the machine
halts at the phase of searching for isapnp cards, with the screen kind of "desolved",
very weird.

I am gonna rebuild the bzImage for 2.4.2-2 to see if I had any luck. :-(

Hi;

For a newbie install I would recommend Mandrake,
http://www.linux-mandrake.com , as it is the most easy to install
distro. There is a list of mirrors on their site that you can
download it from. As for the documentation,
http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/doc/80/en/user.html/ . That should
start you off in the right direction, if not post again.

My plan is to stick a couple of hard disks full of my audio library in to a little
Pentium box and have it probe around for Windows and Macintosh computers on a TCP/IP
network and hook itself up as a password
protected fileserver.

I'm no total beginner, but I'm certain somebody has already built these kinds of

everyone posted on my success or failure here.

On a note, I know I'll probably use Netatalk and Samba and I got both recent packages
and a little Linux distro(a RedHat7 in fact) and the distro is running fine on a
set-aside partition(plus boot and swap). I'll test any
setups I come up with on a G4 Mac and Win2000 machines of friends.

Thanks for any help whatsoever.

To do that, you can add the line

  alias ide-tape off

in the /etc/modules.conf file

Also, adding

  below st ide-scsi

will force the auto-load of ide-scsi when you access /dev/st0

Three years ago I experimented briefly with Red Hat 5.0 and 5.1.
I had no problem configuring email for Elm or Netscape (which I think
I had to download, although I might be wrong about that). Today I have
been struggling to get my email going with Red Hat 7.1 for over a week.
I had it running briefly with Netscape but I must have forgotten what
I did because I can't get it running again. I can send email, but I
cannot receive it. Arrgh. I hate spending a week struggling with the
same problem especially when I've solved it before. Maybe I'm getting
dumber instead of smarter.

What books shall I read? What HOWTO's? (I've already searched all of
my many books, and the Linux Config HOWTO.) Now what? What files should
I check for problems?

I'm a little disappointed that Red Hat 7.1 with GNOME is
giving me more trouble than Red Hat 5.0 and 5.1 from the command line.
I thought the newer distributions were suppose to be easier?

Any suggestions would be deeply appreciated.

But misc/snd.o is not the alsa sound driver, isn'it the regular OSS driver ?
In any case, your modules.conf files is setup to load that sound module, and
it would seem that you installed a new kernel but did not install the new
modules correctly. (did you do 'make modules' and 'make modules_install' ?).
Also, run 'depmod' to update the modules info.

In any case, to restart the alsa driver you have to do

  /etc/rc.d/init.d/alsasound restart

or something like that. that should give you an indication of what's happening.
Any reason you want to use the alsa drivers ? I think the SB16 is well supported
by the native kernel sound modules.

I got a mail from another guy who told me to copy /root/.Xresources to my user
dir, and it works fine.

I'll try it some day :-)

How much do you want to do yourself (in terms of installing necessary things from
source instead of using prepackaged rpm's)?
Try Slackware or Root linux (search freshmeat). With the last you will get pretty
light installation still including all the modern stuff (glibc 2.2.1 kernel
2.4.2, kde 2.1, but if you don't install X you will get really tyny
installation).
