Throw away this bugreport - it was my own fault, i.e. there was a
little race condition in the programs I was running which, however
only showed (luckily! because I could have produced the completely
wrong results, making me think that the Universe is entirely
different from what it is supposed to be :) ) on an SMP box.
Bug fixed, problem gone - all pipes are normal.
