Hi all,

I currently have a PR440FX Dual PPro running RH Linux 5.1 kernel 2.0.35.
Onboard Adaptec SCSI, Onboard Intel EEPro100, 9GB SCSI drive.

This machine is running Apache, sendmail, qpopper, radius, BIND, etc.
It is my primary Authentication/Mail/Nameserver machine.

I do have another machine that runs backup authentication, nameservice,
etc. (not relevent to this discussion)

If I build another machine with a PR440FX and all components the same, add
a 100MB ethernet card in each for connectivity to each other, and set it
up as a cluster with the primary server, what would the benefit be?

For example:

If one of the drives (9GB in each) failed, would the server/cluster still
run, albeit at reduced capacity/CPU?

Would this make sense for redundancy at all?

My goal is not necessarily to get a cluster up in use, but rather looking
at a cluster as a possible solution to having a "hot" online "backup".
(to look exactly like the current primary server to the users, not just
backup authentication and nameservice).

I do have the system backup up to tape, etc. and can rebuild it if
something fails. The problem is I sometimes can't be there to do it right
away and still want the users to be able to use the system without
noticable downtime or loss of functionality.

Any comments or ideas?

Is there a particular web site or document that describes in detail the
technical aspect of what the clustering software/setup can/does actually
do?

Thanks,

Curt
