it doesn't seem to work for non-SMP machines.  It has been 'broken' quite
a while.  IE I have a PII/300 notebook that I run 2.0.35 on, and this
works quite well for doing a shutdown -h now, which also powers it off.
late 2.1 and 2.2 kernels don't complain when built with that .config
option set, but they don't shut the power off either...

Been meaning to look to see what has changed, but life stays too busy here
and 2.0.35 works fine on my notebook.
